KING'S BIRTHDAY WEEKEND - CHANGES TO YOUR COLLECTION DAYS

From 1 October 2020 Napier’s rubbish will no longer be collected in single use black plastic bags.

While the collection will still be weekly we will be changing to 120 litre wheelie bins. This equals the amount residents are currently allowed to put out in two 60 litre rubbish bags. The bins will be owned by Napier City Council.

There are several reasons behind this change.

  • There is a health and safety issue for the staff with the repetitive lifting and throwing of rubbish bags into a rubbish truck.
  • The unsightly sight and smell of waste from bags ripped open by neighbourhood pets, vermin and seagulls.
  • This removes thousands of single use black rubbish bags from being disposed of into our landfill.

Who will receive the new wheelie bin service?

The service is for all urban and rural residential addresses in Napier, and some commercial addresses in the CBD. It also applies to shopping areas in the city who pay rates charges for kerbside waste collection.

When will our NCC wheelie bins arrive?

The new wheelie bins will be delivered during August and September this year. The new service doesn’t start until 1 October, so your wheelie bin will not be emptied before then. Please continue to put your rubbish out in up to two rubbish bags until 1 October.

What can I put in my new wheelie bin?

You can put all your household rubbish that can’t be recycled, reused or composted in the wheelie bin, e.g:

  • Soft plastics
  • Used nappies
  • Polystyrene
  • Broken glass
  • Plastics 3-7

Please note this EXCLUDES the following items:

  • Garden waste
  • Hot ashes
  • Batteries
  • Hazardous waste
  • Medical waste
  • Liquid waste

If you require a garden waste collection you can arrange a service for this through a commercial contractor.
